13 September 2022

Pakistan and China have agreed to strengthen joint efforts to ensure the security of staff and projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Pakistan's state radio reported on Monday evening.

According to it, the agreement was reached during the ninth meeting of the Joint Working Group on CPEC Security in Islamabad. At the meeting, the PRC representatives highly valued the measures taken by Islamabad to ensure the security of Chinese projects and employees on the territory of Pakistan, as well as the efforts made to identify the organizers and perpetrators of terrorist attacks targeting Chinese citizens living in the Islamic republic.

The sides discussed an initiative to create a separate joint working group on security for non-CPEC projects, the radio noted.

CPEC is part of China's the Belt and Road initiative, proposed in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping to boost international multilateral trade and investment projects involving as many countries as possible and using Chinese as well as foreign capital. As stated by the project participants, the creation of this economic corridor will give impetus to the development of Pakistan's economic and transport infrastructure through the construction of modern transport networks, numerous energy projects and special economic zones, as well as ensure rail delivery of goods from China to the port of Gwadar for further sea transportation to Africa and West Asia.
