22 November 2023

Islamabad has applied to join BRICS in 2024 and is counting on Russia's assistance in the issue of the republic's joining the association. Pakistan's new ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, mentioned this in his first interview with TASS.

"We have already submitted an application and are in contact with member countries to secure support for Pakistan's membership. We hope to receive assistance from Russia in this regard," emphasized the head of the diplomatic mission, responding to a question about the country's interest in joining the association.

The ambassador stated that Islamabad expects to join BRICS under Russia's chairmanship as early as 2024. "Yes, that is the expectation," he confirmed in response to a question.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that BRICS plans to agree on a list of candidates for partner-state status for the upcoming summit in Kazan in 2024. He emphasized that during the Russian presidency in the association, special attention would be given to expanding the "circle of BRICS friends," including in Latin America.
