The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on Tuesday in New York, according to reports from a TASS correspondent.
A key moment of this session will be the High-Level Week from September 24-30, when global leaders and foreign ministers will gather to share their views on international issues and outline strategies to address global challenges. The Russian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
A historic development at this session is the inclusion of Palestinian representatives in the General Assembly Hall, seated alongside UN member states. This was made possible by a resolution passed by the General Assembly on May 10, 2024. While Palestine remains an observer state without voting rights, its representatives can now be included in the speaker list for Middle East-related sessions, propose amendments, and submit procedural motions on behalf of country groups. However, they are still unable to run for UN body positions.
During the opening session, Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago formally handed over the role of session president to Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon (2009-2019).
Before High-Level Week, the General Assembly will focus on technical matters, such as approving the agenda and forming committees. Additionally, the “Summit of the Future” will be held on September 22-23, aiming to forge a new international consensus on building a better present and securing the future. The summit's themes will cover sustainable development, peace and security, financing, a digital future, youth and future generations, and global governance.
The High-Level Week will kick off with an address by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Other prominent Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron, are expected to speak. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is also scheduled to address the UN on September 25.
