Palestine urged Russia to persuade Israel to abandon the annexation of the West Bank

13 September 2019

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the Russian Foreign Ministry asking to influence Israel's plans to annex the West Bank, which were announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the election campaign, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal said in an interview with Izvestia.

«On the morning of September 11, we wrote a letter to the Russian Foreign Ministry asking to influence Israel, as Russia is one of the few countries having good relations with all players in the region. The Russian Foreign Ministry on the same day declared its commitment to UN resolutions and expressed concern», - the Palestinian diplomat was quoted as saying.

Russia, according to Nofal, has the ability to influence Israel on this issue, especially since there is a growing awareness in the world that such statements can lead to «a new religious war in the region».

«We would like to continue to maintain peace with Israel, to fulfill all existing agreements preserved, no matter what. If Netanyahu starts annexation, the peace process will come to an end», - said Nofal.
