Palestinian Authority condemns killing of Fatah military commander in Lebanon

31 July 2023

The administration of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expressing concern over the deteriorating situation in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon, where armed clashes have erupted.

"We strongly condemn the treacherous assassination of Fatah military commander Abu Ashraf al-Armoushi by terrorists who infiltrated the Ain al-Hilweh camp. This heinous act is aimed at destabilizing the region," the statement was reported by WAFA  on Sunday.

"We denounce this despicable massacre, and those responsible for it will not escape justice. We are determined to hold them accountable for their actions," the statement added.

According to the text, extremist groups in the camp "are being influenced by the enemies of the Palestinian people and pose a threat to the security of the Lebanese state." "Such criminal activities cross all boundaries and are entirely unacceptable," the statement emphasized.

The administration expressed its support for the Lebanese government's efforts to restore order and uphold the rule of law. "We reaffirm our commitment to enhancing Lebanon's sovereignty and stability, particularly in the Palestinian refugee camps," the message reads.

Earlier, the Fatah leadership called for the extradition of militants responsible for the attack on al-Armoushi.

The conflict in Ain al-Hilweh has led to the disruption of normal life in Saida, a town located 40 km from Beirut. Due to the threat of shelling, traffic on the southern highway was blocked. Several hundred residents of the camp had to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in a local mosque.

Medical sources report that the death toll from the shootings has reached six, with 15 others injured and taken to hospitals. There are also Lebanese military personnel wounded who control the entrances to the camp. Ongoing efforts, led by the Muslim clergy and Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, are being made to reach a lasting ceasefire agreement.
