The major Palestinian factions, which signed a declaration for unity and cohesion in Algiers on Thursday, agreed to support resistance to the Israeli occupation. This was stated in the Algiers declaration, quoted by the Algeria Press Service news agency.
The factions agreed to "unite the Palestinian national institutions, mobilize the energy and available resources necessary to implement reconstruction projects, strengthen the infrastructure and social framework of the Palestinian people in order to support their resistance to the Israeli occupation." They stressed "the importance of national unity as the basis of any resistance to occupation capable of achieving the legitimate goals of the Palestinian people." In this regard, the factions pointed to the need to follow the path of "dialogue and consultation to resolve disputes," emphasizing the role of the Palestine Liberation Organization as "the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people."
The factions also agreed "to elect the Palestinian National Council internally and externally on the basis of a system of full proportional representation, in accordance with the agreed formula and laws adopted with the participation of all Palestinian forces, within a period not exceeding one year from the signing of this declaration."
The document, which was worked out at the Conference to unite the Palestinian ranks, was signed by leaders or members of the leadership of such organizations and parties as the Islamic Hamas movement, the Movement for the National Liberation of Palestine, the Palestinian National Initiative, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front of Palestine and others.
