Palestinian PM Calls for 'Marshall Plan' for Gaza

04 March

Prime Minister of the interim Palestinian government Mohammad Shtayyeh has called for a "Marshall Plan" for the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need for aid, reconstruction, and economic recovery following Israeli aggression.

"The Gaza Strip is facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe due to Israeli aggression, and it requires a 'Marshall Plan' that includes aid, reconstruction, and economic recovery as soon as [Israeli] aggression stops," Shtayyeh told the delegation of US Congress members, including Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Michael Bennett, during a meeting in Ramallah in the West Bank.

Shtayyeh reiterated his call for the US to support an immediate ceasefire, facilitate the opening of crossings for humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, and provide the population with basic services in a humanitarian crisis.

He criticized the use of US veto power in the UN Security Council to prevent the adoption of resolutions supporting a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, stating that this action encourages Israel to continue its aggression under international cover. Shtayyeh called on the US not to use the veto in response to Palestine's request for full UN membership and to recognize Palestine as a state bilaterally.
