Parliament of Tajikistan has banned Russian names and surnames

29 April 2020

The Parliament of Tajikistan has adopted amendments to the law "On state registration of civil status acts", according to which from now residents of the country will not be able to use Slavic suffixes in surnames and patronymics.

Thus, according to the document, when registering the names of newborns, it will not be possible to use the suffixes "-ov-/-ev -" in surnames, and "— ovich/- evich" and "-ovn- /-evn-"in patronymics.

The exception, as stated by the Minister of Justice Muzaffar Ashurien, will be made only for national minorities living on the territory of the Republic.

In addition, the amendments only apply to children born after the adoption of the law. Those who have already received birth certificates with Slavic suffixes will not have to change their patronymic and last name: they will be issued passports with the same name.

Citizens of Tajikistan were recommended to abandon Slavic suffixes in patronymics and surnames back in 2007. Then the example was set by President Emomali Rakhmonov, who changed his name to Rakhmon. After the head of state, almost all officials changed their surnames.
