Pashinyan assessed the activities of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh

29 April 2021

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he assesses the activities of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh as effective.

"I want to especially note the role that Russia and Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin played in stopping the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. And I want to emphasize that I assess the activities of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh as effective, it is already obvious to us now," Pashinyan said at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

He reminded that a trilateral commission headed by the deputy prime ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan is working.

"But I would like to note that, unfortunately, Azerbaijan still has not fulfilled a very important article of the trilateral statement of November 9... It concerns the return of prisoners of war, hostages and other detainees," Pashinyan said.

He thanked Russia for "its efforts to solve this issue".

In late September 2020, hostilities resumed in Nagorno-Karabakh, a continuation of the years-long conflict and resulting in civilian casualties. The parties made several attempts to conclude a ceasefire, but a trilateral agreement reached on the night of November 10 proved successful. With Moscow mediating, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a complete cease-fire and to an exchange of prisoners and dead bodies. Yerevan also gave Kelbajar, Lachin and Agdam districts to Baku. In addition, Russian peacekeepers were deployed in the region.

On January 11, after talks between Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian leaders Ilham Aliyev, Nikol Pashinyan and Vladimir Putin, the Russian president announced the creation of a working group to be headed by the deputy prime ministers of the three countries.
