Pashinyan commented on the French Senate resolution on recognition of NKR

26 November 2020

The Senate of France, calling on the government to recognize the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, put the issue of recognition of the region on the international agenda. This opinion was expressed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"The decision taken by the French Senate is historic. Artsakh's international recognition (Karabakh's self-name - ed.) is on the international agenda," Pashinyan wrote on Facebook.

On Wednesday, the upper house of the French parliament adopted a resolution with an absolute majority of votes calling on the government to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh. The document is of a recommendatory nature.

State Secretary at the French Foreign Ministry Jean-Baptiste Lemoine, commenting on the adoption of the document, said Paris' recognition of NKR independence would not benefit anyone. At the same time, he reminded that Armenia had not dared to take such a step either.

In turn, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev told RIA Novosti that Baku regards the French Senate's resolution on Karabakh as an ordinary piece of paper and called such a decision "a very shameful step for French politics and parliamentarism".

Situation in Karabakh

At the end of September, an armed conflict began in Nagorno-Karabakh, with Armenia and Azerbaijan accusing each other. In a month and a half, the sides made three unsuccessful attempts to cease fire. On the night of November 10, Moscow, Yerevan and Baku signed the fourth document. According to that document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian military stops fighting, stops at occupied positions and exchanges the prisoners. Yerevan must return Baku to Kelbajar, Lachin and Agdam districts.

Under the agreement, Russian peacekeepers are stationed in Karabakh. They will control the line of contact as well as the Lachin and Nakhichevan corridors. In addition, a Russian-Turkish monitoring center has been set up in Azerbaijan to monitor compliance with the ceasefire.
