Pashinyan criticized reaction of CSTO to Azerbaijani Armed Forces' invasion in May 2021

13 April 2022

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) did not properly respond to Azerbaijani incursions on the Sotk-Khoznavar section in May 2021. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed this opinion in the Armenian parliament on Wednesday.

"The way the CSTO reacted to the incident was a failure for the organization itself. Despite the existing procedures, the CSTO has not decided to monitor the site at the moment, justifying the Armenian public's long-standing fears that the organization important for Armenia's security will do nothing at the right time," he believes.

The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the area of Gegharkunik and Syunik regions aggravated in May 2021. At that time, the Armenian defense ministry said that Azerbaijani armed forces tried to carry out "certain works" in one of the border regions of Syunik region in order to "adjust the border". The Armenian ministry said that after the measures taken by Armenian units, the Azerbaijani military stopped these works and negotiations on regulating the situation began.

Pashinyan during the session of the Armenian Security Council described the events as an encroachment on Armenia's territory. Later, Yerevan said it applied to the CSTO in connection with the escalation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
