Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed the opinion that the fights on the line of contact in Karabakh are fought for its status, he wrote about it on Facebook.
The head of the government added that Armenia could have avoided the conflict if it had "surrendered its territories and agreed to Karabakh's undefined status, for an indefinite period of time, with no mechanism for further status adjustment.
According to him, it was not possible to achieve an acceptable or any status for Karabakh. The last opportunity for this, according to Pashinyan, ended in 2011 in Kazan, where a summit of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia was held, which ended without reaching an agreement on the basic principles of settlement in the region.
"Can the war solve the issue of Karabakh's status? Yes, if we achieve success in the war. Can we achieve success in the war? Yes, if we concentrate our national potential around this goal and sincerely and selflessly go towards it," the Armenian Prime Minister added.
Battles on the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh began on September 27. Armenia and Azerbaijan accuse each other of unleashing military operations, in Karabakh, they report about artillery shelling of peaceful settlements of the unrecognized republic, including its capital Stepanakert.
The leaders of Russia, the USA and France called on the opposing sides to stop fighting and start negotiations without preconditions.
On October 9, the heads of the ministries of foreign affairs of Azerbaijan and Armenia arrived in Moscow at the invitation of the president of Russia and conducted negotiations for over ten hours together with their Russian counterpart. As a result, Yerevan and Baku agreed to ceasefire in Karabakh from midday of October 10, to exchange prisoners and bodies and to agree upon specific details of the truce. However, on the same day, the sides began accusing each other of truce violations.
A second attempt to organize a humanitarian truce was made on the night of October 18, but a few hours after the ceasefire came into force Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating it again.
