Pashinyan invites political forces of Armenia for consultations on snap elections

26 December 2020

Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan invited Armenian political forces for consultations on snap parliamentary elections in 2021. He made a post about it on his Facebook page.

“I invite the parliamentary and interested non-parliamentary forces to take part in consultation on 2021 snap parliamentary elections”, the Armenian Prime Minister wrote.

Pashinyan said that the opposition movement demanding his resignation had failed to win the popular support. According to him, the opposition had had every opportunity, and the government had not used any force to hold onto its power.

The protests demanding Pashinyan’s resignation have been taking place for over one month. The opposition believes that the joint statement with President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh signed by the Armenian Prime Minister on 9 November was, in fact, an act of capitulation. Pashinyan’s opponents also hold him responsible for the republic’s economic and social problems.

Against the backdrop of the current situation in the country, Armenian President Armen Sarkissyan has called for early parliamentary elections and to hand power over to the government of national accord before then. Pashinyan says that he will not resign, as any change of power has to only take place through elections. At the same time, several of his supporters have already said that they do not rule out the possibility of snap elections.
