Pashinyan says Nagorno-Karabakh's status remains an unresolved issue

11 January 2021

The status of Nagorno-Karabakh remains an unsettled issue. This statement was made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday following talks held in Moscow with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"Unfortunately, this conflict remains unresolved. Of course, we have managed to provide a cease-fire, but there are still a lot of issues that must be resolved. One of these issues is the status of Nagorno-Karabakh," he said.

Pashinyan said that Armenia is ready to continue negotiations in the frames of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship, particularly on the definition of the region's status.

The prime minister also called the trilateral statement signed on Monday very important. "I will not hide the fact that the implementation of the agreements of this statement can change the economic image and face of our region," he stressed. - "Economic innovations can also lead to better security guarantees, and we are of course ready to work constructively on that."

Exchange of prisoners of war

The prime minister said that the issue of prisoner-of-war exchange between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains incompletely resolved, but the sides have agreed to continue work.

"We have not been able to resolve the issue of prisoners of war to the end. This is a very sensitive issue and we must resolve it as soon as possible," Pashinyan said.

"The conflict in Karabakh has not yet been resolved and its (the region - TASS) status has yet to be determined, and Armenia is ready for negotiations within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs," the prime minister added.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, with active fighting there. Baku and Yerevan have disputed the ownership of the region since February 1988, when it announced its secession from the Azerbaijani SSR. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the full cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh on November 9. The document provided for the stopping of the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides in the occupied positions, the transfer of a number of areas under Baku's control and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor.
