Patrushev: Historical Memory Key Resource in Confronting Colonialism

15 September 2023

Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council (SC) of the Russian Federation, emphasized in an interview with the magazine "Razvedchik" that historical memory is the most crucial resource in the struggle against modern colonial powers, which, despite Western efforts, they have not been able to erase.

"The most crucial asset in resisting the ambitions of contemporary colonial powers is our historical memory, which, despite Western efforts, remains indelible," he stated.

Patrushev noted that people worldwide still recall centuries of brutal oppression, emphasizing that no narratives about the 'civilizing mission of the white man' can obscure the historical horrors. He cited examples, stating, "They will not forget English slavery, the atrocities committed by Hitler's Nazis and their collaborators. Neither will they forget the Belgians, who inflicted gruesome punishments on Congo's inhabitants by cutting off their limbs for insufficient rubber harvesting results. Nor will they forget the French and Americans, who, through two centuries of inhuman exploitation, transformed the prosperous island of Haiti into a vast slum."

Patrushev also pointed out that the UN remains the primary mechanism for facilitating dialogue and coordination among nations on issues that demand collective action. He noted that the UN Charter already incorporates the principle of multipolarity founded on regional representation. "In this regard, the imperative of expanding the UN Security Council to include nations from Asia, Africa, and Latin America is gaining momentum," stressed the secretary of the Russian Security Council.

He further highlighted that the objective conditions for transitioning to a multipolar world order have emerged due to the profound socio-economic and political crisis in the Western world and the rapid advancement of non-Western societies. Additionally, "subjective factors come into play, reflected in the aspirations of various actors to construct a new global architecture that rejects the division of nations and peoples based on classes, types, or varieties," according to Patrushev.
