Patrushev says US withdraws from Afghanistan abruptly to focus on Ukraine

10 January 2023

The US withdrew its military forces from Afghanistan in order to focus on Ukraine, Russian Security Council (SB) Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said in an interview with aif.ru.

In general, he noted that the US presence in Afghanistan has turned out not to fight terrorism, but to create multi-million-dollar corruption schemes and a multiple increase in drug production. "The sudden withdrawal of the Americans from that country, however, turned out to have a lot to do with concentrating on Ukraine, where, according to their estimates, the preparation of the Kiev puppet regime for offensive anti-Russian actions was going on successfully," Patrushev stressed.

According to him, this confirms US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's statement that if the US military had not left Afghanistan, Washington would not have been able to allocate so much money to Ukraine. "In addition, some of the equipment withdrawn from Afghan soil was moved to Europe, mainly to Poland, allowing the Europeans to militarize the Kiev regime," the SB secretary added.

He recalled that the United States created terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaeda (banned in Russia) or ISIS (banned in Russia), to achieve their goals, and "fought them themselves." "By arranging the demonstrative liquidation of terrorist leaders like Osama bin Laden, a hundred new ones were trained and armed," Patrushev pointed out.
