19 August 2021

There are no prerequisites for deployment of the Russian military contingent in Afghanistan. The Russian authorities are ready for a dialogue with those forces in the country, which will base on the people's will and build a favorable state. This was announced by Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev in his interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

"There are no prerequisites for this [the deployment of Russian troops to Afghanistan]. We will focus primarily on political and diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan and will seek, together with our partners, ways of establishing an intra-Afghan dialogue and a peaceful settlement of problems in the country," said Patrushev.

According to him, for these purposes, in particular, the Moscow format of consultations on Afghanistan was created, which "successfully functions. "In addition, we attach great importance to the UN's coordinating role in international efforts on the Afghan settlement," the Russian security council secretary added.

Patrushev emphasized that Russia is interested "in a peaceful, united and developing Afghanistan, from whose territory there will be no threats to the region." "We are ready to establish a dialogue with those forces that will rely on the will of the Afghan people, follow their aspirations, and work for the transformation of Afghanistan into a normally functioning, strong and prosperous state," summed up the secretary of the Russian security council.
