Pelosi called for immediate sanctions against Russia over suspicions about Afghanistan

Speaker of the House of representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi stated the need for measures against Russia in connection with the latter's alleged contacts with the radical Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) against American troops in Afghanistan. The politician expressed this opinion on Wednesday on MSNBC.

"We must impose sanctions against Russia, and we must do so immediately," Pelosi said. She added that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, "neglected his duty" and did not take measures to protect the US military, although, according to her, he was notified of the existing suspicions.

The New York Times reported on June 26 that a Russian military intelligence unit encouraged the Taliban to attack international coalition troops in Afghanistan. Later, the publication informed that the US intelligence services were considering the possibility of a connection between the death of three American soldiers in Afghanistan and Russia's alleged willingness to provide monetary rewards to members of the radical movement.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called the mentioned statements a lie and an "absolute hoax". The Russian Foreign Ministry described the first publication on this topic in the American press as containing deliberately false information.

The White House said on June 27 that Trump was not informed of the suspicions of the intelligence services. The next day, the head of state wrote on Twitter that the US intelligence service recognized this information as unreliable.
