10 April 2019

Since June 2018, more than 177 thousand refugees have been able to return to Syria with the support of Moscow and Damascus. The Russia’s Permanent Representative in the organization of Vasily Nebenzya declared about this speaking at a meeting UN Security Council on the issue of refugees.

«In the summer of 2018, Russia launched an initiative to promote the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. We can see a steady dynamic in this process. Every day, about a thousand people enter Syria, mostly from Lebanon and Jordan. Since June 2018, more than 177 thousand people have returned to the country», the diplomat noted, in particular.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, in turn, stressed out the most of the more than six million Syrian refugees around the world want to return home, but «are afraid to do it at the moment».

«We thank Russia for organizing this dialogue. But we need access to those areas where civilians return to be sure that the situation is safe there», he noted.
