There is no talk of recognizing the Taliban movement banned in Russia at the moment, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.
"At the moment, this is out of the question, we have repeatedly said so. It is useless to give any forecasts," the Kremlin spokesman responded to a question about the possibility of recognizing the new Afghan authorities.
Speaking about the situation in Afghanistan, Peskov noted that "there are many problems of humanitarian nature there which oblige many countries to enter into certain contacts with representatives of the Taliban".
TASS reported in the beginning of June with reference to a source in the diplomatic circles that Charge d'Affaires of Afghanistan in Moscow Jamal Nasir Garwal might take part in the XXV St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
On April 6, the Russian diplomatic mission sent a note to the Afghan embassy recognizing Garwal, appointed by the Taliban government, as chargé d'affaires of Afghanistan in Moscow. The official representative of the Russian MFA, Maria Zakharova, described it as a step toward resuming full-fledged bilateral diplomatic contacts, but emphasized that it was still premature to talk about official recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. On April 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the chargé d'affaires of Afghanistan in Moscow had already started his work.
