Joint exercises of CSTO countries in Tajikistan in October are very necessary in the context of the situation in Afghanistan, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

"These are exercises that are very necessary," Peskov said.

"You know that the presidents met recently, I mean the CSTO members, they emphasized their concern over how the situation in Afghanistan is developing, the unpredictability of this situation in many ways, and the need for the organization to be on guard and further improve the methods and ways of military interaction," the presidential spokesman continued.

In October, three joint exercises with the military contingents of the CSTO member states, "Interaction", "Search" and "Echelon", will be held on the territory of Tajikistan near the border with Afghanistan.

A meeting of the CSTO Collective Security council was held in September under the chairmanship of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. Russian president Vladimir Putin participated in the event online.

The Collective security treaty was signed in 1992 in Tashkent, and in 2002 it was decided to create the organization. The CSTO includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
