Peskov: no conversation between Putin and Biden on Afghanistan is planned yet

02 September 2021

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden are not yet scheduled to talk about Afghanistan, but Moscow and Washington are engaged in a dialogue on the situation in the republic. This was reported by Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the Russian President at the Eastern Economic Forum on Thursday.

‘There have been no such plans yet. The Russian and American parties are in contact in terms of exchanging views on how the situation is developing in Afghanistan. But no high-level contacts are planned yet’, the Kremlin spokesman said.

The situation in Afghanistan has been touched upon in each of Putin’s recent conversations with foreign leaders, Peskov said.

‘Even over the last few weeks there have been a lot of telephone conversations, a whole series. And you probably noticed in our reports that in each of these conversations there was an exchange of views on Afghanistan’, the Kremlin spokesman said. This is how he responded to the question of whether Putin was in contact with other leaders on this issue.
