Peskov: Putin, African leaders noted importance of continuing grain supplies

20 June 2023

Further grain supplies to the poorest countries were on the agenda of Russian President Vladimir Putin's talks with representatives of seven African states last Saturday, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"The importance of supplying grain (from Russia's point of view - primarily Russian grain) to the African continent, the poorest countries, was emphasized. The importance of continuing these supplies was indeed emphasized," he said.

This was how the Kremlin spokesman responded to the question whether the possibility of direct supplies of grain to Africa outside the grain deal was discussed at the talks on Saturday. The meeting focused primarily on the situation in Ukraine and ways to resolve the conflict.

On July 22, 2022, a package of documents was signed in Istanbul on the supply of food and fertilizer to the international market. Initially the agreements were concluded for 120 days, but they were prolonged several times. At the same time, the Russian authorities repeatedly stressed that the obligations to Moscow were not fulfilled.
