Peskov: Putin will not send greetings to Washington on US Independence Day

04 July 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not send Washington a congratulatory telegram on the occasion of US Independence Day because this year was the culmination of the United States' unfriendly policy toward Russia, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

"No, no congratulatory telegram will be sent this year," Peskov said in response to a related question.

In response to a clarifying question about the reason for such a decision, the Russian president's press secretary said: "It has to do with the fact that this year was actually the culmination of the unfriendly policy against our country by the United States."

"So, of course, under these conditions it can hardly be considered appropriate to send such a congratulatory message," the Kremlin spokesman added.

On July 4, US residents celebrate a major national holiday, Independence Day, which commemorates the 1776 declaration proclaiming the freedom of the United States from British domination. The Declaration was adopted by Congress on July 2, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Two days later, Congress approved an amended version of the document and ordered it printed and distributed to the public. Therefore, the birthday of the United States is considered to be the Fourth of July.
