Peskov: Russia continues to make efforts for political and diplomatic solutions in Karabakh

09 November 2020

Russia is making every possible effort for a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

"The Russian side is still making every possible effort to settle the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh by political and diplomatic means," said the Kremlin representative, answering the question of whether this conflict can have a military solution.

The spokesperson for the President of the Russian Federation did not comment on the information that in a telephone conversation on November 7, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed Russian leader Vladimir Putin to create a joint working group to settle the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to Peskov, the Kremlin press service on November 7 already reported on the topics discussed by Putin and Erdogan. "I have nothing to add to this report. The subject of Karabakh was really touched upon," Peskov said.

Erdogan's proposal was earlier reported by CNN Turk TV channel with reference to a diplomatic source.

The situation in the region escalated on September 27 and active battles began on the disputed territory. Both sides report killed and wounded, including among the civilian population. The ceasefire agreement was reached three times already, but almost immediately the parties to the conflict started to exchange mutual accusations of their violation.
