Moscow has not yet taken any decision on recognizing the Taliban (banned in Russia), the Russian side is trying to understand how the Taliban's statements will correlate with real actions, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.
"You know that so far no decisions have been made to recognize the Taliban. In addition, you also know that, indeed, we are monitoring very closely everything that is going on there. Most importantly, we are still trying to understand to what extent the Taliban's promises and statements will correlate with their future actions," the Kremlin spokesman said when asked to comment on the Taliban's invitation to the Russian side to participate in the ceremony announcing the new government of Afghanistan.
Peskov stressed that it is important for Moscow to understand what the political system in Kabul will look like under the Taliban "both systematically and personally."
A Taliban spokesman told Al Jazeera television on Monday that the Taliban have invited Russia, as well as Turkey, China, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar, to attend the event to announce the composition of the new Afghan government.
