Peskov: Russia Rejects Criticisms Regarding its Peacekeepers' Activities in Karabakh

20 September 2023

Russia does not accept any accusations or criticisms regarding the actions of its peacekeepers in Karabakh, as these allegations are without basis, Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian president, told reporters.

"The accusations made against us are entirely baseless. They lack any factual foundation. Nevertheless, we maintain our ongoing dialogue with the Armenian side. Armenia has always been and continues to be a crucial ally and partner, a nation with which we share strong ties. Similarly, we maintain communication with Azerbaijan, another vital partner of ours. Additionally, we continue our interactions with the Armenian population in Karabakh," he stated in response to remarks by Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan, who suggested that Russian peacekeepers were not fulfilling their obligations.

Peskov underscored that despite the accusations, Moscow maintains communication with both Baku and Yerevan.

According to the Kremlin spokesperson, the current situation pertains to Azerbaijan's actions on its own territory from a legal standpoint, so Russia does not accept the allegations against it. "The Armenian side acknowledged Karabakh as an integral part of Azerbaijani territory. Several provisions have significantly changed since then, and we do not acknowledge such reproaches directed at us, especially since there is a decision by the Armenian side to recognize Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. Legally, we are now discussing the actions of the Azerbaijani republic on its own territory," he added, highlighting that Moscow also relies on the trilateral agreements in managing the crisis in the region.

"Our military personnel are not engaged in mere academic debates; they are carrying out a concrete mission as peacekeepers, assisting in the evacuation of civilians, primarily children, from perilous areas. This work continues around the clock. The efforts persist," Peskov concluded.
