Peskov: Russia understands Turkey's commitment to NATO obligations

Moscow understands Ankara's commitment to its obligations in NATO, but at the same time it is interacting with Turkey in important areas. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, commenting on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to agree to Sweden's accession to NATO.

"Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, Turkey has its obligations, Turkey is committed to its obligations. This has never been a secret for us," the Kremlin spokesman said. "This is how we treat [Ankara's decision], in this regard we understand everything perfectly well," he noted.

However, Peskov noted that the decision on Sweden and NATO was only "one part of the story." "The other part of the story is our relations. Yes, we have disagreements, we do not hide them either, but there is also that part of our relations that absolutely corresponds to the interests of our two countries, which are important enough for us and important enough for the Turkish side itself," Peskov emphasized.
