Contacts with Azerbaijan on the Karabakh issue are constantly maintained within the framework of the implementation of trilateral agreements, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked if any talks with the Azerbaijani side were planned after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Moscow.
"Contacts with the Azerbaijani side continue on a permanent basis. Everyone agrees that the implementation of the provisions of the trilateral agreements is very important and has no alternative. Contacts with both Armenian and Azerbaijani sides are maintained within the frames of the implementation of the agreements," Peskov said.
The Kremlin spokesman specified that during the Russian-Armenian negotiations held in the evening of July 7 the leaders "had a detailed talk about bilateral relations". "Various details of the implementation of trilateral agreements and trade and economic cooperation, of course, were discussed," Peskov said.
The situation in the conflict zone around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, when active hostilities began there. On November 9 that year, a trilateral statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which made it possible to achieve the cessation of hostilities in the conflict zone. The Azerbaijani and Armenian sides halted their positions, a number of areas came under Baku's control, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor.
