Spokesman for the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov denied rumors about possible Russian interference in the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, stressing that such information is spread by liars.
Earlier, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, a single opposition presidential candidate in Turkey and leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), posted a post on Twitter in Russian in which he urged Russia not to interfere in the election.
"I do not know what caused such appeals. <...> We strongly reject such statements, we officially declare that there can be no interference. If someone provided Mr. Kilicdaroglu with such information, then they are liars, and this is what you should say," Peskov told reporters on Friday.
In general, he stressed that the Russian Federation "very much values bilateral relations with the Republic of Turkey." "Because it [Turkey] has so far taken a very responsible, sovereign and thoughtful position on a whole range of regional and global problems that we face," the Russian presidential spokesman added. "And we like this position," he noted. "A country that values bilateral relations, will not do anything [wrong]," Peskov concluded.
"We have repeatedly said and insist that we do not interfere in the internal affairs and electoral processes of other countries," he noted. According to Peskov, for Kilicdaroglu "it is very important to remember the history with the Americans." "They spent tens of millions of dollars on investigations and then came to the conclusion that there was no interference," the Kremlin spokesman recalled.
