Russia intends to assist the Yemeni authorities and Houthis in finding a compromise and is in favor of launching relevant negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations, Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the world organization, Dmitry Polyanskiy, said on Thursday, speaking at a Security Council meeting.

"We continue to monitor the acute military-political crisis in Yemen. Of particular concern is the situation on the border between Marib and Shabwah provinces, where bloody clashes between Houthis and groups loyal to the country's president have recently resumed," Polyanskiy said.

Russia will "continue to support UN efforts." "We intend to continue encouraging the official Yemeni authorities and leaders of Ansar Allah Houthi movement to show a constructive approach and readiness for compromises," he noted. - "We call for the launch, under UN auspices, of inter-Yemeni talks on the future political settlement of the country, the result of which will be the achievement of a comprehensive and long-term solution to the conflict based on taking into account the interests of all leading political forces in Yemen".

According to the diplomat, the difficult socio-economic situation in Yemen remains a matter of particular concern. "The disappointing figures from the UN Office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs speak for themselves," he said. - "We reiterate the need to lift restrictions on the delivery of food, medicine and other basic necessities to all parts of the country".

"The ongoing attacks on civilian targets, including in Saudi Arabia, are of serious concern," Polyanskiy pointed out. - "We call on the warring parties to strictly observe the provisions of international humanitarian law, to immediately and completely abandon combat operations that lead to the destruction of non-military infrastructure and civilian casualties".

Russia counts on the soonest resolution of the problem of the Safir tanker and the settlement of the remaining technical disagreements, he noted. The first deputy representative of Russia recalled UN Security Council resolution 598 and other initiatives aimed at sub-regional stabilization, including Russia's updated Concept of collective security in the region.
