Pompeo announced the restoration of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran on September 20

28 August 2020

Us Secretary of State Michael Pompeo claims that the UN Security Council's anti-Iranian sanctions will be restored at midnight on September 20, despite the fact that the world organization's Security Council previously refused to meet the relevant US request.

"Last week, the US initiated a 30-day process to restore almost all UN sanctions against Iran after the Security Council failed to fulfill its mission to maintain international peace and security. These sanctions will be resumed at midnight GMT on September 20, " the chief of American diplomacy wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

The head of the US Foreign Ministry added that the US would veto any resolution against their proposal to resume anti-Iranian restrictions. "If any member of the UN Security Council introduces a resolution on maintaining the sanctions relief regime, the US will oppose it. If a resolution is not introduced, sanctions against Iran will still resume on September 20. This is how UN Security Council resolution 2231 works," the Secretary of state explained, attaching an excerpt from this document to confirm his words.
