Post-pandemic development as the main topic of the congress of world religions in Kazakhstan

13 September 2022

The main topic of the forthcoming VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which will be held in Nur-Sultan on September 14-15, will be the post-pandemic development of countries. Chairman of the Senate (upper house of parliament) of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev informed about it on Tuesday at the session of the secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.

"The seventh Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is taking place at a very crucial time for the world community. The whole world is experiencing the continuing impact of the pandemic, conflicts, sanctions, climate change and other global challenges. We all see an increased level of geopolitical tension and conflict in the world. Mistrust between countries, wars, ongoing terrorist activity, and the lack of effectiveness of international organizations have a negative impact on the overall world situation," Ashimbayev said.

According to him, in these circumstances, the forum can send an important signal to the international community - to call for dialogue, overcoming contradictions, ending conflicts and achieving peace. "In general, the topic of post-pandemic development is expected to be one of the main topics during the upcoming congress. The coronavirus has caused economic and social problems, declining living standards and forced isolation. It has caused an upsurge of discontent and protests. The pandemic has forced a new look at the problems of balanced economic and technological development, preservation of the environment, reduction of social, gender and digital inequality," explained the speaker of the senate.

He noted that in these conditions, both citizens and political leaders need spiritual support, a new value paradigm, worldview reference points. "We are convinced that the new outlines of the post-pandemic world and the underlying principles of its development cannot be discussed without the participation of religious and spiritual leaders", emphasized Ashimbayev.

The secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is the working body of the forum. The speaker of the senate of the parliament of Kazakhstan is the head of the secretariat of the Congress. Members of the secretariat consist of representatives of leaders of world religions participating in the Congress. Among them are representatives of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, Hinduism and international organizations.
