President Kyrgyzstan Recognizes Afghan War Veterans' Impact on Youth Patriotism

15 February

President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov has acknowledged the significant role played by Kyrgyz veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War in fostering patriotism among the youth. He made this statement in his address to the nation on the  35th anniversary of the Soviet Union's withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"Today, the veterans of the Afghan war stand at the forefront of our valiant defenders, ready to sacrifice their lives for their homeland and compatriots. We are all aware of their steadfastness on the battlefield during the terrorist invasion in the Batken and Chon-Alai regions in  1999-2000, as well as in other challenging circumstances for our nation. Their courage and valor undoubtedly serve as an inspiration and mold the patriotic fervor of the younger generation," Zhaparov said.

The president also noted that the Afghan war veterans faced not only rigorous military tests but also engaged in "creative labor for the prosperity and development" of Kyrgyzstan. He assured the veterans of his continued support and care, stating, "We will provide all possible support to our brave heroes who are always prepared to defend the fatherland's borders. Your care and respect from the state will persist into the future."

Zhaparov remembered that over 7,000 Kyrgyz soldiers participated in the Afghan War, with  300 killed,  1,500 wounded, and four missing. He expressed deep sympathy for the loss of every parent whose child was taken from them and vowed that the memory of those who fell would never be forgotten.

The withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan was completed on February 15, 1989. Soviet troops were introduced into Afghanistan on December 25, 1979, to support the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, which came to power as a result of the April Revolution of 1978, in the fight against the armed formations of the mujahideen. The withdrawal of Soviet troops was carried out in accordance with the Geneva Accords concluded on April 14, 1988, between Afghanistan, Pakistan, the USSR and the United States. During the Afghan conflict (1979-1989) the irrecoverable losses of the USSR amounted to about 14 thousand people.
