President of Kazakhstan scheduled elections to the lower house of parliament for January 10

Regular elections to the Majilis (lower chamber) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan will be held on January 10, 2021. The corresponding decree was signed on Wednesday by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.


"Today I signed a decree on holding elections to the Mazhilis of Parliament. The decree of the Central Election Commission appointed the election of deputies of maslikhats (local representative bodies - TASS) of all levels. The forthcoming elections will take place in constitutional terms, on January 10, 2021. All political parties had time to prepare for participation in the upcoming election campaign, to develop an election platform, to improve party infrastructure," Tokayev said in his address published by the press service of the head of state.


According to the President, the CEC and the Prosecutor General's Office will constantly monitor the observance of legality, transparency and fairness of elections.


"Prior to the beginning of the new election campaign, measures were taken for political modernization, development of multiparty democracy and expansion of civic participation in the public and political life of our country", Tokayev reminded.


Regular elections of deputies to the Majilis are appointed by the President at least five months in advance and are held no later than two months before the end of the Parliament. Powers of deputies of VI convocation are valid till March 24, 2021.


Previous extraordinary elections to the Majilis were held in March 2016. The ruling party "Nur Otan" ("Light of the Fatherland") won them with 82.2% of the vote, which took 84 of 107 seats in the lower house. The Communist People's Party of Kazakhstan and the "Ak Zhol" party ("Bright road") also took place in the Majilis, each with seven seats.
