Presidents of Russia and Turkey discussed the escalation in Idlib by phone

Today, Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation, the main topic of which was the escalation of tension in Idlib Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference.


"Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Turkish side’s initiative. The conversation was detailed and focused on the need to do everything possible to fulfill the initial agreements on the Idlib de-escalation zone", he said.


According to Lavrov, the possibility of holding the necessary contacts at different levels in the near future was also discussed.


The situation in Idlib escalated after the terrorists' a large-scale offensive on the positions of the Syrian government troops on February 27. The SAR army returned fire, and as a result, the Turkish military were injured, who, as stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, "should not have been there".


A total of 33 Turkish soldiers were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that immediately after receiving information about the victims of the Turkish military, measures for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops were taken, and the safe evacuation of killed and wounded Turkish soldiers to the territory of Turkey was provided.
