Presidents of Russia and Turkey reached agreements on Idlib

06 March 2020

The talks between Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan lasted about 6 hours.

The main topic of discussion was the situation in the Syrian province of Idlib.

Following the talks, Putin said that Russia and Turkey "have found acceptable solutions to the problem of aggravation in Syria".

So, according to the new Memorandum, the ceasefire comes into force on March 6. In addition, a 12-kilometer security corridor will be created in Idlib near the M-4 highway, and joint patrols will begin on March 15.

Erdogan called the exchange of views held in Moscow useful, expressing hope that the situation would not get out of control in the future.

The situation in Idlib escalated after the terrorists launched a large-scale offensive on the positions of the Syrian government troops on February 27. The SAR army returned fire, and as a result, the Turkish military was injured, which, as stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, "should not have been there".

A total of 36 Turkish soldiers were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that immediately after receiving information about the victims of the Turkish military, measures  for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops were taken, and the safe evacuation of killed and wounded Turkish soldiers to the territory of Turkey was provided.
