Pushkov says of development of "Afghan syndrome" in US

31 August 2021

Senator Alexei Pushkov commented on the consequences of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan on his Twitter. According to the member of the Federation Council, Washington has previously experienced internal problems after the failed war in Vietnam, and now the US has developed the "Afghan syndrome."

"Its main feature is the collapse of faith in the military power and effectiveness of US actions. And both in the United States and around the world," Pushkov wrote. He also noted that the failure recognized by "almost everyone" except US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who still considers it a "success."

Earlier, Zabihullah Mujahid of the Taliban* said that the Americans had failed to reach their goals in Afghanistan and had been defeated. Nevertheless, he hoped to build a good relationship with Washington.

At the beginning of August, against the background of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan announced by the US, the Taliban* intensified its offensive against the government forces. The militants went into Kabul on August 15 and took control of the presidential palace, and on August 16 they stated that the country was over and the form of government would be clarified in the near future.

US military and diplomats planned to complete an organized evacuation by August 31 and to continue to assist foreigners and at-risk locals who wanted to leave at a later date. On Tuesday night, the Pentagon announced it was completing its withdrawal from Afghanistan and ending a 20-year mission. The airport in Kabul, where the evacuation was being carried out, came under full control of the Taliban *.
