Pushkov sharply responded to the US demand to stop developing missiles

22 July 2020

Senator Alexey Pushkov commented on Twitter on the words of the US President's Special Envoy for Arms control, Marshall Billingsley, who said that Russia should refuse to develop and implement the latest types of nuclear-powered missiles, calling them "flying Chernobyl".

"And the latest US nuclear missiles, which will replace all the ICBMs "Minuteman", is this a humane weapon or "angels from heaven"? For Billingsley's information: this is the weapon of "Judgment Day", - the parliamentarian was indignant.

In his opinion, Washington should focus on new mechanisms for controlling nuclear weapons, and not tell Moscow what to "work on or not".

"Instead, they withdrew from the INF, withdraw from START-3 and work to strengthen the already powerful nuclear potential. This is the approach of "Judgment Day", said Pushkov.

Earlier, speaking about Russian missiles with a nuclear power plant, Billingsley said that such weapons "should not exist at all." According to him, there is no justification for these "systems".

Last year, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (IRNF), accusing Russia of violating it. Moscow rejected these attacks and suggested that Washington continue the dialogue, but the American side did not meet them halfway. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that it was not against involving other countries in discussions with the US on strategic stability issues.

At the end of June, Billingsley said that the United States did not see options for imposing a moratorium on the deployment of medium-and shorter-range missiles in Europe, which were previously banned by the IRNF.

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3), signed in 2010, remains the only existing arms limitation agreement between Russia and the United States. START-3 expires in February 2021, and Washington has not yet announced whether it intends to extend it. The US administration at various levels has stressed the need to include China in the negotiations to develop a new trilateral nuclear agreement. Beijing rejected this idea. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that Moscow supported the extension of the Treaty without preconditions.
