A total of 34 countries have expressed interest in participating in BRICS activities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with senior BRICS representatives responsible for security matters.
“We cannot overlook the growing interest in BRICS from a wide range of nations. To date, 34 countries have shown interest in engaging with our organization,” the Russian president stated.
Putin underscored that, as the current chair of BRICS for 2024, Russia is committed to coordinating the group's activities effectively. “Our chairmanship comes with a crucial responsibility to facilitate the smooth and rapid integration of new member states into all BRICS mechanisms,” he explained.
In light of the increased interest, Putin noted that “intensive discussions are ongoing among BRICS members regarding the framework for a new 'partner states' category. This will be formalized at the upcoming summit in Kazan from October 22 to 24.” He also mentioned plans to evaluate potential candidates for this new status.
