Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have agreed to coordinate the two countries' approaches to Afghan issues and to intensify Russian-Pakistani contacts at various levels, the Kremlin press service said on Wednesday following the leaders' telephone conversation.

"It was agreed to coordinate approaches to the Afghan problem - both in bilateral and multilateral formats. The use of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's potential in ensuring regional stability and combating terrorism and the drug threat was considered advisable," the Kremlin said.

The Kremlin also pointed out that while discussing the situation in Afghanistan, the parties "stressed the importance of maintaining peace and security in the country, preventing violence and establishing an inter-Afghan dialogue that would facilitate the formation of an inclusive government that takes into account the interests of all segments of the population".

The Russian president and the Pakistani prime minister touched upon a number of topics on the bilateral agenda, "including the development of trade and economic ties and the implementation of joint projects in the energy and humanitarian fields".

"Russian-Pakistani contacts at various levels will be intensified," the Kremlin stressed.
