Putin and Raisi Agree on Enhanced Russia-Iran Coordination in BRICS and SCO

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi held a telephone conversation, as reported by the Kremlin press service, during which they discussed cooperation within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

 

The statement released by the Kremlin press service outlined, "Both leaders agreed to further synchronize the efforts of Russia and Iran on various multilateral platforms, including within the framework of the SCO and the BRICS association, of which Iran became a full member."

 

Iran officially became a full member of BRICS on January 1, 2024, after submitting its membership application in June 2022.

 

Furthermore, on July 4, 2023, Iran joined the SCO as its ninth full member during the 23rd meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State. Iran's application for SCO membership was initiated in 2008, and the admission procedure was initiated in September 2021. In 2022, a memorandum outlining Iran's obligations upon joining the association was signed.
