Putin called the topic of Afghanistan a priority during talks with Merkel

Russian President Vladimir Putin  following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the situation in Afghanistan was a priority during the meeting in the Kremlin.

"Due to the rapid development of events in Afghanistan, we made this topic one of our priorities. The Taliban [banned in the Russian Federation] control almost the entire territory of the country, including the capital. This is reality, and these realities should be taken into account to prevent the collapse of the Afghan state," Putin said.

He believes it is counterproductive to impose on Afghanistan forms of government and public life that are unusual for this country. "We must stop the irresponsible policy of imposing someone else's values from outside, the desire to build democracy in other countries according to someone else's models, taking into account neither historical nor national and religious features, completely ignoring the traditions according to which other people live," said the Russian president. "We know Afghanistan, we know it well, we have seen how this country is organized and how counterproductive it is to try to impose unfamiliar forms of government and public life on it," he explained.

According to Putin, any such socio-political experiments have never been successful, they only lead to the destruction of states. "We see that the Taliban have announced the end of combat operations, have begun to restore public order, and have promised to guarantee the safety of local residents and foreign diplomatic missions. I hope that all this will be put into practice. This process should be closely monitored by the international community under the coordinating role of the UN Security Council," stressed the Russian head of state.

He called it especially important "to prevent terrorists of all stripes from penetrating the territories of neighboring states, including those disguised as refugees".
