12 October 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with his Kyrgyz counterpart, Sadyr Zhaparov, in Bishkek in advance of the CIS summit.

"Today's discussions took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, and they proved to be highly effective. All participants actively engaged in dialogue, with many offering their suggestions for the advancement of our cooperation," stated the Russian president.

During the discussions, they had the opportunity to thoroughly examine "a wide spectrum of international relations, relevant regional and global issues." Furthermore, as Putin highlighted, a comprehensive package of intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents had been prepared for his visit to Kyrgyzstan.

In terms of economic partnership, the president emphasized that bilateral trade turnover increased by a remarkable 37 percent last year, reaching a record level of 3.4 billion dollars. Putin added that in the first half of 2023, this volume is expected to grow by an additional 18 percent.

In addition to these developments, Putin also conferred the Order of Honor upon President Zhaparov. The Kyrgyz leader is set to preside over the forthcoming CIS summit on Friday.

In the course of his visit, Vladimir Putin will also engage in several individual meetings with his fellow CIS leaders. Notably, he is scheduled to meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev today. Their discussions will encompass the situation surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh and the Russian peacekeepers stationed in the region, as well as the potential return of Karabakh Armenians to their places of residence. On Friday, the Russian president will hold a meeting with Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon.
