Putin designated 1 July as the day of voting on approving amendments to the Constitution

01 June 2020

All-Russian vote on amendments to the Constitution will be held on July 1, President Vladimir Putin said today.

The heads of the CEC, Rospotrebnadzor and the regions were instructed to ensure full safety at the sites.

"And, of course, I will address our citizens, the people, so they take an active part in this vote. This implies the Constitution, our Fundamental Law.  It is the foundation of this country’s life, the current life of our children," Putin said.

President also contacted Education Minister Sergey Kravtsov to clarify whether the voting on that day would prevent him from passing the single state exam, the main stage of which will start on July 3.

"Sergey Kravtsov confirmed that it wouldn't interfere in any way, on the contrary, he even expects that the All-Russian vote in the use of school premises would then help in organizing the  State Exam,"  Putin said.

Today it became known that July 1 would be a day off. The polling stations will open a week before the announced date - it will be possible to vote on amendments to the Constitution from June 25 to July 1.

According to Ella Pamfilova, chairman of the Russian Central Election Commission, such measures will help to avoid queues and crowds at the sites. Before the start of voting, the election commission members will be widely tested to the coronavirus, and all participants will be handed out masks, gloves and disposable pens.

"It will be safer to vote than going to a store or any other social event," she said.

Previously, voting on amendments to the Basic Law was scheduled for April 22, but in late March, due to the spread of the coronavirus infection, Vladimir Putin announced its postponement. Then the President stressed that the new date would be determined based on the recommendations of physicians and the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the country.
