Russian president Vladimir Putin on Wednesday discussed Russia's work in several international organizations, including against the backdrop of the situation in Afghanistan, with the permanent members of the Russian security council.

"We will discuss today our participation in the work of some international organizations, which are certainly of particular interest to us, bearing in mind that this is related to the key areas of our foreign policy, the resolution of security issues, especially in light of current events in the East, in particular, of course, in Afghanistan," the Russian head of state said.

The meeting was attended by prime minister Mikhail Mishustin, chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, head of the presidential administration Anton Vaino, interior minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, director of the SVR Sergei Naryshkin, and special presidential envoy for environmental protection, ecology and transport Sergei Ivanov.

On the situation in Afghanistan

The Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) began a large-scale operation to gain control of Afghanistan after the announcement by the United States in the spring of its decision to withdraw its armed forces from the country. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without a fight and president Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

On September 7, the Taliban announced the composition of an interim government, which they could not approve for nearly two weeks, mainly because of what they claimed were "technical difficulties and preparations." Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund was appointed prime minister, with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, leader of the radical political wing, and Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi, deputy head of the movement's political wing, as his deputies.
