Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Iraqi President Barham Saleh on Tuesday over the tragic consequences of the fire in a hospital in the city of Nasiriyah, which killed 90 people.

"Please accept our sincere condolences on the tragic consequences of the fire <...>. Russia shares the sorrow of those who lost their relatives and loved ones as a result of this disaster and hopes for a speedy recovery of all the victims," the Russian leader said on the Kremlin website.

The fire in a hospital for coronavirus patients in the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq occurred on Monday evening due to careless handling of an oxygen cylinder, which led to its explosion. In connection with the incident, Saddam al-Tawil, Minister of Health of Dhi Qar Governorate, has submitted his resignation. In turn, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi declared mourning for the dead in the country, ordering the establishment of a special commission to investigate the causes and all the circumstances of the tragedy. As it became known earlier on Tuesday, the death toll from the fire was 90 people.
