Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Iraqi President Barham Saleh over the aftermath of a terrorist attack in Baghdad, reiterating his readiness to cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

"The murder of dozens of civilians, including women and children, committed on the eve of the holy holiday of Eid al-Adha is shocking in its cruelty and cynicism. We strongly condemn this atrocity and expect that its organizers and perpetrators will suffer the punishment they deserve," said the president in a telegram posted on the Kremlin website on Tuesday.

The president confirmed his readiness to step up cooperation with Iraq in fighting all manifestations of terrorism.

"Please convey words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and friends of those killed, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those wounded," the message noted.

On Monday, an explosive device went off in a busy market in the predominantly Shiite-populated eastern district of the Iraqi capital, Madinat Sadr. The attack killed 30 people and injured about 60 others.
