BRICS is recognized as one of the pivotal components of the evolving multipolar world order, which increasingly considers the interests of all nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
"BRICS stands as one of the key elements of the emerging multipolar world order, increasingly reflecting the interests and aspirations of states from both the global South and the East, as well as our supporters worldwide," Putin stated.
"We are eager to enhance cooperation with all countries showing interest in BRICS activities. We are actively engaging in dialogue through the BRICS plus/outreach format and are working on establishing a category of partner states," Putin added.
He also highlighted that the primary objective of Russia's current chairmanship in the association is to create the most favorable conditions for the progressive development of all its participants. "I am convinced that by acting together and united, we will be able to fully realize the economic, investment, technological, and human potential of our countries, strengthen the constructive influence of BRICS on global processes, and make the world we inhabit safer and more harmonious," the president emphasized.
Reminding the audience that the number of BRICS members will increase to 10 in 2024, Putin noted that each member state possesses its own ancient culture and traditions and implements its unique model of socio-economic and political development. He assured that Russia is making every effort to ensure that the new members are effectively integrated into all of BRICS' multidisciplinary mechanisms.
The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum is being held on July 11-12 at the Tavrichesky Palace in St. Petersburg. Russia assumed the presidency of the association on January 1, which now includes 10 states. Since its inception in 2006, the BRICS group has experienced two waves of expansion. South Africa joined the original members—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—in 2011. In August 2023, six new members, including Argentina, were invited to join the association simultaneously, but Argentina declined in late December. The five new members—Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia—began full-fledged participation in BRICS on January 1, 2024.
