Putin met with President of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with the leader of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, on Wednesday during his visit to Turkmenistan. After meeting, the heads of state shook hands and then went into the negotiation hall for a brief talk before the start of the sixth Caspian Summit.


This is the second meeting of the two presidents recently. On June 10, the Turkmen leader visited Moscow, his first official visit as Turkmen leader. During the talks in the Kremlin the leaders discussed the condition and prospects of relations between Moscow and Ashgabat.


The summit meeting resulted in a declaration on the deepening of strategic partnership between the two countries. It aims to strengthen cooperation in the political, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, as well as in security and environmental protection.


During the visit, a package of joint documents on cooperation in agriculture and trade, banking, information, transportation and inter-regional cooperation was also signed.


In the spring of 2021, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who was then Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, participated as a guest in a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Kazan. On the margins of this event, he had a bilateral meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.


Program of the visit


Putin arrived in Ashgabat on Wednesday morning. He flew in from Dushanbe, where he had held talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon the day before.


Upon his arrival in Turkmenistan, Putin went to congratulate the father of the Turkmen president, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who also previously served as head of state and is now chairman of the upper house of parliament.


Later on Wednesday, Putin will take part in the Caspian summit and hold separate meetings with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Iran - Ilham Aliyev and Ebrahim Raisi.
